Beside the geological pothole near Hilton Falls is a sign that reads as follows:
Hilton Falls
During the period of glacial retreat, some 12,000-14,000 years ago, a large volume of meltwater flowed through this area. The pothole seen here was worn in the bedrock by loose stones being spun around by the force of water flowing over the Escarpment at this point. As the volume of meltwater decreased, the stream was reduced to its present location. The ruins of an old mill at the existing falls reflect the role of the Escarpment as a source of power for early settlers.
